Certificate equivalence

Comparing international qualifications with Tanzanian standards

A qualification earned under Cambridge, IB or another international system is not automatically expressed in Tanzanian terms. Equivalence is the review that makes the comparison explicit, documented and reusable.

Recognition should not depend on who reads the certificate

Without a common reference, the same certificate can be read differently by a school admitting a student, a university reviewing an application and an employer checking a requirement. Families end up repeating the same explanation, with different results.

Equivalence review replaces that with a single documented comparison: what the qualification covers, what Tanzanian level it corresponds to, and on what basis. The decision is stored with the record, so it does not have to be re-argued at the next institution.

What a review considers

  • Awarding body and programme structure
  • Subjects taken and assessment method
  • Duration and level of study completed
  • Grades and the awarding scale used
  • Authenticity of certificates and transcripts

Situations that call for an equivalence decision

students transferring in

A student moving from an international curriculum into a Tanzanian school needs their completed level recognised so they are placed in the correct class.

School leavers continuing study

Applicants to Tanzanian higher education institutions need their foreign certificate expressed in terms the institution can act on.

Employers and licensing bodies

Where a qualification is a condition of employment or registration, an equivalence decision provides a defensible national reference point.

Returning Tanzanians

Families returning after study abroad can have qualifications reviewed before enrolment rather than during it.

From application to certificate

  1. 01

    Application

The applicant or the receiving school submits the qualification: awarding body, programme, subjects, grades and the year of award, together with scanned certificates and transcripts.

  2. 02

    Document check

Submitted documents are checked for completeness and legibility. Incomplete applications are returned with the specific items that are missing rather than rejected outright.

  3. 03

    Comparison against national standards

Reviewers compare the programme structure, subject load and assessment against the corresponding Tanzanian level, using consistent criteria across applications.

  4. 04

    Decision and certificate

The outcome is recorded against the applicant's record and an equivalence certificate is issued. The decision, the evidence behind it and the reviewer are retained for audit.

What to have ready

Original certificates

Clear scans of the awarded certificate or statement of results from the awarding body.

Full transcripts

Subject-level results covering the whole programme, not only the final year.

Identity documents

Identification matching the name on the certificate, and evidence of any name change.

Have a qualification reviewed

Schools and institutions with a PRIME-IS account can raise an equivalence application directly. Individual applicants should contact the secretariat for the current submission route.
